About New Moon Studio Space

While it can be magical, making art is labor.

A lot of creative work unfurls in the brain or the heart of the artist, but many forms of artmaking also require a physical space if they are to happen at all. Like professionals of any kind, artists often find it helpful to work in proximity to other artists.

New Moon Studio Space offers the conditions that artists may need in order to maintain, grow or deepen their creative practices. It aims to be a place for experimentation, collaboration, focus and discovery that benefits both tenants and the broader community. Having been both a school and the headquarters of a robust volunteer organization over the course of its nearly 100-year history, the building that houses New Moon Studio Space has always been a place dedicated to learning and growth. We are excited to carry that tradition into the future with the help of our tenants!

Meet Kate and Mike

Kate Baird is a native Springfieldian, while Mike Stevens is a transplant from Texas who now embraces Springfield as his home.

After some time in other cities, we moved back to Springfield in 2014 because we love it here! As believers in the potential of the arts to work wonders in both individual lives and communities, we’ve been proud to participate in the creative life of Springfield in a variety of ways. These include Mike’s fourteen years as the Executive Director of the Moxie Cinema and Kate’s eight years as Museum Educator at the Springfield Art Museum.

We opened New Moon Studio Space in September 2023 because we wanted a space like this to exist in our community. We look forward to working with our tenants and neighbors to shape a bright future for New Moon Studio Space!
